The soloution in the end was to run the following powershell commands: Get-VMSnapshot -VMName vmwithcheckpoint.domain.com -ComputerName hyper-v.domain.com fl - this returns the VM state. and to remove the checkpoint:

As far as I know, there is no way to delete the broken recovery checkpoints through the GUI or powershell. Instead, you must manually merge them.
